Reconnecting

I returned from Chile at the end of October 2012 not having written one single entry into my blog of proposed observations that I meant to write while travelling.  It wasn’t through lack of trying as I actually carried a notebook with me and took lots of notes; however I encountered a few challenges that only became apparent while travelling.  What took me by surprise was the work writing bilingual notes entails and all the considerations I needed to be mindful of when writing about family.

I found that I needed to be extra careful in voicing my opinion as an outsider and not be seen as passing judgement on people's way of life and traditions.  I thought I was prepared but I actually found it very difficult to write freely without thinking about the implication my ideas would have on my family and friends, particularly as I felt like a foreigner most of the time.

I was also unprepared about how time consuming it would be to visit my big family who are spread all over the country.  Being on the road quite a lot and staying as a guest in people’s homes gave me little time to dedicate to writing.

I’ve been back for a few months now and my commitment to this blog has not diminished.  I’ve given a lot of thought to my next entry which will be coming soon.

Reconectando 

Regresé de mis vacaciones en Chile a fines de octubre de 2012 sin haber escrito ni siquiera un relato en mi blog de observaciones que me había propuesto a escribir durante mi viaje. No fue por falta de intentos ya que siempre llevé un cuaderno conmigo y tomé muchas notas, sino que me encontré con algunos desafíos que sólo se hicieron evidentes durante mi viaje.

No estaba preparada para el trabajo que me tomaría escribir notas bilingües.  También me di cuenta de que tendría ser mucho más cuidadosa de lo que esperaba al expresar mi opinión, más que nada, no quería parecer como si estuviera juzgando sobre la gente y su modo de vivir.  Encontré que se me hizo muy difícil escribir libremente sin pensar en las implicaciónes que mis ideas tendrían sobre mi familia y amistades

También me tomó por sorpresa cuanto tiempo me tomó visitar a mi gran familia, quienes están esparramados por todo el pais.  Los frecuentes viajes entre las ciudades que ligan a mi familia y el estar como huésped en sus casas me dió poco tiempo para dedicarme a la escritura.

He estado de vuelta ya por unos meses y mi compromiso con este blog no ha disminuido. He pensado bastante acerca de mi siguiente articulo lo cual espero publicar muy pronto.
